It is a shame why these beautifully handsome animals needed to be put down. The veterinary clinics inside areas are deeply concerned with this new outbreak and are urging all equine owners to be aware and look out for signs and symptoms of neurological symptoms, horses which can be unable to get out of bed again after falling, paralysis and high fevers. Owners will also be advised not to move the animals and positively not transport them to any horse events and shows where they can come in contact with other horses.
EHV-1 is extremely contagious and cross-contamination is incredibly likely. Affected horses must be quarantined to prevent the spread with this virus. Currently the horses that seem to be targeted with this virus/disease are barrel horses. Many of the barrel racing events are now being cancelled till the end of the month in hope that less contact might help stop the spread of this disease among other horses like a health precaution.
Equine owners should have their horses checked out by their veterinarian as being a precautionary measure. Eastern Minnesota and Western Wisconsin are areas the EHV-1 disease will be more concentrated and horse travel just isn't recommended and if your horses are healthy to postpone any racing events currently.
